In May 2025, Weltrade Packaging proudly celebrated 20 years in business, a milestone that marks two decades of innovation, evolution and unwavering commitment to helping brands stand out through smart, sustainable packaging solutions.
From humble beginnings with just two team members to becoming a trusted partner to brands across the skincare, cosmetic, food and supplement industries, this is the story of how Weltrade grew from a local idea into a national packaging force.
The Origin: Where It All Started
Our story begins with founder Steve Welsh, whose introduction to the plastics industry came unexpectedly. After working in a plastics company, Steve became fascinated by the role packaging played in product success. It was more than just a container, it was about form, function, presentation and helping brands communicate their value.
In 2005, Steve and his wife Andrea made the bold decision to launch their own business. With no warehouse or office space, they rolled up their sleeves and converted their garage into a functioning workspace. That remodelled garage became the first home of Weltrade Packaging.
Every sample, order and phone call was managed from that humble but determined setup. It was a space filled with big ambition and a clear vision. Steve and Andrea weren’t just building a business they were building something with purpose.
Their goal from day one was to offer more than just packaging. They wanted to deliver a partnership model that provided reliable service, expert advice and a genuine commitment to their clients’ success.
As Steve recalls, “We wanted to do things differently. We wanted clients to feel looked after, to feel like we understood their vision. That was really important to us.”
Early Growth and the First Big Break
Weltrade’s first clients came from the skincare industry, where the need for high quality packaging that was both practical and visually appealing was growing fast. The team’s deep product knowledge and personalised service quickly built trust, and before long, word of mouth helped grow their client base.
In 2015, the business reached a turning point. With operations growing steadily, Steve and Andrea moved the business into its first proper commercial premises in Jade Drive, Molendinar, on the Gold Coast. It was a big step up from working out of the garage, and a clear signal that Weltrade was on the rise.
Key Milestones: Expanding Capability and Capacity
By 2018, Weltrade had outgrown their premises in Jade Drive and relocated nearby to Production Avenue. This site became the birthplace of in-house manufacturing a move that would transform the business.
Bringing production under one roof gave the team more control, flexibility and the ability to move quickly on custom projects. This shift also opened the door to new industries, including supplements, health food and advanced cosmetic packaging.
In late 2023, Weltrade moved once again, this time to Barnett Place. This new facility not only supported the expanding team, but also doubled manufacturing capacity, enabling Weltrade to take on more complex jobs while reducing lead times for clients.
Culture and Team: The Power Behind the Progress
From two people in a garage to a thriving team of 37, Weltrade has remained focused on one core value: Creating Sustainable Solutions.
Whether it’s customers, colleagues or suppliers, relationships are everything. The culture at Weltrade is built around clarity, care and purpose everyone understands why their work matters.
Steve often shares how proud he is of the team culture: “We’ve built something more than a workplace. It’s a place where people genuinely care about doing good work for our clients and for each other.”
As Weltrade looks ahead, the focus remains on sustainable solutions. The team is committed to innovating with new materials and processes that reduce environmental impact without compromising on performance or shelf appeal.
This includes embracing circular economy practices, designing for recyclability and continuing to educate clients about packaging choices that align with both brand and environmental goals.
A Word From Our Founder
When asked what advice he would give to a new business owner, Steve’s response is both thoughtful and practical:
“Be clear and focused. Define your purpose for the next 100 years, and your mission for the next five. That clarity will keep you grounded through all the challenges.”
It’s this kind of vision that has guided Weltrade through two decades of steady growth and industry change.
To our incredible clients, dedicated staff, valued partners and everyone who has supported Weltrade since those early days, we say thank you. Your trust and belief in what we do has shaped who we are today.
As we celebrate 20 years, we’re not just looking back, we’re looking forward, excited about what’s next and committed to continuing our purpose.
Here’s to the next 20 years in creating sustainable solutions that help products stand out and businesses grow.
